The science of the pencil

May 12, 2000

Science exists everywhere, even in the everyday objects we use every day. We can think of a pencil: it is made of many different materials, including revolutionary materials such as graffiti, made up of flat sheets called graphene.

Graphene is a material of the future with a wide variety of applications, such as in the manufacture of more efficient batteries, flexible electronic devices, and even in the creation of new medical devices, such as lighter and more resistant implants. All this reminds us that science is present in our daily lives, even in the simplest things.

Understanding how the world works is very necessary, but it is not always easy to bring scientific knowledge to the non-researching public. In this workshop, we want to make the knowledge contained in a humble pencil available to everyone in a practical way, from the hands of prestigious researchers, in a pioneering research centre. Because without science there is no future.

In this activity, divided into 3 experiments, you can discover the science behind one of the most commonly used objects at school: the pencil. From the big, through the small, to the invisible.
