Diagonal-Besòs Campus showcases success of EU funded research initiatives

Oct 09, 2025

Representatives from various administrations visited the Diagonal-Besòs Campus and the CCEM to learn about its development and achievements through EU-funded projects, highlighting the impact of FEDER support on research, innovation, and excellence.

This morning, we had the visit of an institutional delegation from local, regional, national, and European administrations involved in the programming, management, execution, and communication of EU-funded projects. The visit aimed to present the creation, development, and launch of the Diagonal Besòs Campus, within the framework of projects co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The day began with a warm welcome and institutional introduction by the Delegate of the Rector at the Campus Diagonal Besòs, Xavier Gil Mur, accompanied by the Research and Transfer Area teamThen, the Director of the Research and Transfer Area, Mireia de la Rubia Garrido, presented the impact of European funding on the campus, from the construction of the infrastructures to the acquisition of advanced scientific equipment, as well as a your throughout the campus. The visit concluded with a visit to our center, the  Centre de Recerca en Ciència i Enginyeria Multiescala de Barcelona (CCEM) BarcelonaTech (UPC), where attendees explored our facilities and learned more about our research lines and projects. The tour was guided by our Director Josep Lluis Tamarit Mur and our Project and Innovation Manager Laura Rubio Ortega.

The Diagonal-Besòs Campus, inaugurated in 2016, has positioned itself as one of the UPC campuses with the highest scientific production. The Campus hosts leading research groups and centers of excellence, including ours, which was recently accredited as a Maria de Maeztu Center of Excellence. During these last years the Campus obtained 6 ERC (European Research Council), and the active participation in up to 16 European projects, as well as the presence of 7 ICREA researchers, as well as the award of one of the National Research Awards to our Scientific Director Maria Pau Ginebra.

This growth reinforces the compromise of the UPC, the Diagonal-Besòs Campus and the CCEM with the research, innovation and knowledge transfer, as well as the importance of the projects financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to achieve all these milestones.
