BAMBBI (Bio-inspired AntiMicrobial Bone BIoceramics) is a pioneering research project funded as an Advanced Grant funded by the European Research Council (ERC). Led by Prof. Maria-Pau Ginebra, principal investigator at the Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering (BBT) group at the Barcelona Center for Research in Multiscale Science and Engineering (CCEM Barcelona), the initiative addresses the critical challenge of bacterial infections in orthopaedic and maxillofacial surgery. By developing innovative synthetic bone grafts that not only support bone regeneration but also possess contact-based antimicrobial properties and mimicking natural mechanisms of bacterial elimination, BAMBBI seeks to revolutionize infection control in medical implants. Moreover, its advancements in tuning the nanostructure of calcium phosphates promise to impact broader sectors, including catalysis, water purification, and protein separation.
