HYDROHEAL
May 14, 2025
The HYDROHEAL project (Multi-functional hydrogels for promoting bone fracture healing through local induced release of pharmaceutical agents and gradual matrix replacement by the regenerating bone) develops injectable and sustainable hydrogels that release drugs locally to regenerate bone fractures and prevent infections safely and effectively.
The HYDROHEAL project is a research initiative dedicated to transforming the treatment of bone atrophy and fractures resulting from trauma, infections, osteoporosis, or cancer, aiming to overcome the limitations of conventional cement and graft therapies. Unlike traditional synthetic polymers (such as polymethyl methacrylate, associated with leakage risks or healing issues) and allogeneic grafts (limited by donor shortages and the risk of rejection or viral transmission), HYDROHEAL proposes an innovative alternative based on self-setting, renewably sourced hydrogel formulations.
Specifically designed to treat vertebral and alveolar fractures, the project develops sustainable and affordable biomaterials for the local and targeted delivery of active ingredients via external stimulation, promoting bone regeneration, preventing infections, and accelerating healing in line with the EU Circular Economy Action Plan and the Chemical Strategy for Sustainability.
