The M-BAT project develops innovative technologies to recover critical raw materials for batteries from waste and secondary sources, driving energy autonomy and the circular economy in Europe.

The M-BAT project (Battery-grade materials recovery from primary and secondary sources through innovative technologies) is a European research initiative funded by the Horizon Europe program, dedicated to developing innovative solutions for the recovery of critical raw materials essential for battery manufacturing, such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and graphite.

In order to drive the energy transition and supply the electric vehicle sector and energy storage systems, M-BAT will develop and validate four technological processes to extract these resources from European secondary sources (mining waste, industrial sludge, end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, and geothermal waters). In doing so, the project aims to reduce Europe's dependence on non-EU countries and foster the circular economy.
