HARMONI

Oct 01, 2026

The HARMONI project is dedicated to decarbonizing cement plants by recovering ammonia from waste effluents and cracking it into a custom hydrogen-fuel blend that turns heavy industry into flexible, renewable energy hubs.

The HARMONI project (High-performance Ammonia Recovery and On-site Hydrogen Production for Decarbonising Cement Industries) is a Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action (RIA) funded by the European Union (Grant Agreement No. 101294365) that aims to decarbonize High-Temperature Process Industries (HTPIs) by integrating them into the green energy grid as intelligent, flexible energy hubs.

Focusing specifically on cement manufacturing, HARMONI addresses the critical challenge of converting intermittent renewable energy sources (RES) into the stable, ultra-high-temperature heat required for production by monitoring and managing real-time energy input fluctuations. To achieve this, the project demonstrates a novel circular economy solution: recovering ammonia (NH3) from ammonium-rich effluents and utilizing dynamic on-site cracking to yield a customized ammonia-hydrogen (NH3-H2) fuel blend optimized for enhanced, low-emission combustion. Launched on September 1, 2026, with a duration of 36 months, HARMONI brings together industrial leaders, energy experts, and research institutions to accelerate the decarbonization and grid integration of foundation industries across Europe.
