The SENSATE project, Low Dimensional Semiconductors for Optically Tuneable Solar Harvesters, is a European Research Council-funded initiative under the Horizon 2020 program, coordinated by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. The project aims to revolutionize photovoltaic (PV) technology by developing advanced thin-film solar cells using one-dimensional (1D) semiconductors such as chalcogenides, halides, and their hybrids. These materials are engineered to achieve high optical transparency (over 50%) and conversion efficiencies exceeding 20%, making them ideal for applications like building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and semi-transparent or colored solar devices. The project also explores innovative device architectures, including asymmetric selective contacts enhanced with dipolar layers, to optimize performance and stability. The MNT group is a key partner in this endeavor, contributing its expertise to advance the project's goals. SENSATE is poised to expand the role of solar energy in sustainable urban environments by enabling versatile and aesthetically adaptable PV solutions.
