Postdoctoral Researcher for CIEFMA & GCM

Deadline: 4th April 2025, but the position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found

Project description

The Center for Research in Multiscale Science and Engineering (CCEM) at UPC is seeking a talented postdoctoral researcher to advance the multiscale modeling of Solid Oxide Electrolyser Cells (SOECs) and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs). This position focuses on understanding the degradation and reliability of SOECs and SOFCs under real-world operational conditions spanning thousands of hours. These insights are critical for the long-term success of hydrogen energy technologies.

Solid Oxide Cells are vital components in the transition to sustainable energy storage and hydrogen generation, playing a key role in reducing environmental impact. Enhancing their reliability is essential for ensuring their widespread and sustainable adoption.
The selected candidate will leverage advanced computational techniques, including fini element modeling, phase field modeling, ab initio calculations, and molecular dynami simulations. Complementary experimental work such as microscopy and micromechanical characterization will be used to enhance understanding of aging mechanisms and refi predictive models. This research aims to bridge multiple scales, from atomic interactions to macroscopic performance, to deepen our knowledge of material behavior and failure mechanisms in SOECs and SOFCs. Ultimately, these efforts will inform strategies quantify degradation phenomena and improve the durability of Solid Oxide Cells.

Required profile

  • Education:
    • Doctorate in Material Science or similar topics
  • Research Experience:
    • Research track on simulation of chemical changes and mechanical properties of SOFC materials.
    • Experience with ceramics and composites and in experimental techniques and processing will be highly considered.
  • Key skills:
    • FEM tools, programming languages.
    • Oral presentation skills and organizational skills (as workshops).
